APRIL 23, 2019  |  academic year 2018-19  |  A YEAR OF WONDER
1. Our Heroic Quest is going extremely well! Heroic Quest is a way for our students to discover and act upon small acts of heroism right here in San Luis Obispo that will benefit our community. Students have been performing good deeds all around town, including collecting donations for Fred & Betty’s, walking a neighbor’s dog, picking up litter on the beach, and baking cookies for local firemen. We love hearing about all the joy our students are spreading.

In order to meet our goal of $48,000 for our Grammar & Middle School Program we really hope to have everyone on board! Make sure to set up an online fundraising page and participate in our Quests on campus! You can be our hero!

2.
Next Monday and Tuesday, SLOCA will be welcoming two visitors from WASC, which is the organization that accredits almost every school in California, including ours. They are here as part of a three-year "progress report" and they’ll be engaging us in several meetings and observing classes. There’s nothing special anybody has to do -- just keep being your same fantastic selves -- but we wanted to let you know in case you hear about observers or you think we look particularly occupied.

We’re looking forward to hearing about WASC’s observations on Tuesday, and we’ll be sure to pass along their findings to you once their visit is complete.

3.
This is the time to put in your classroom request for the 2019/20 school year. Here is the link. Please remember, only educational or sibling requests will be considered. We will take requests through May 6th.

4. Save the date! After winning SLOCAHS’s first-ever league title, our High School Boys Volleyball team will be hosting their first-ever CIF playoff game next Tuesday, April 30th. It’s tentatively scheduled for 7:00 pm at Morro Bay High School, but keep your eyes open for an update later in the week, once CIF publishes their official brackets.

We had so much fun spreading joy through our Acts of Kindness this week! Students delivered flowers around town that had kind notes attached to bring joy to a stranger’s day.

Our Demonstration of Humility & Gratitude is going on all week so drop your canned goods in the bins outside the main office -- all items will be donated to SLO Food Bank.

So far we have raised $13,736.81! Thank you, heroes, for all the good you are doing in our community.

Just a reminder to order your Preschool-UMS yearbook no later than May 6th. Please click this link to place your order today! Note: For HS yearbooks, please consult the high school.
We have some clothing and books on Clearance! Take a few minutes at drop-off or pick-up to take advantage of some serious savings.

Book Buy Backs are happening in the store now. We will be buying back books for Store Credit only. Store Credit may be used to purchase any items, including food, in The Den. Or you may choose to donate your store credit to another family. Here are the books we are buying back:

  • Singapore HIG’s
  • Preschool, Junior Kinder and Kindergarten books
  • Renaissance History and Literature books

Please place any books you would like for us to consider buying back in a box or bag along with your name and email address. We will go through the books to see what books we can buy back. We will email you with a total value of store credit and let you know if there are books that we cannot accept that you can pick up.

We will not be buying back any of the Cambridge Latin books back this year.

Savvy shoppers, be sure to start checking our Used Book Shelves on a regular basis if you would like to save money on your curriculum for next year.

Remember our Thrift Store when you are considering ways to volunteer! We love parent help and have plenty of fun tasks for you to do to pitch in. Stop by any time during business hours (no need to call ahead!). Thank you!
Congratulations to Kate Thompson, our freshman swimmer who won the 100m fly and 200 IM in a varsity meet that included St. Joseph’s, Orcutt Academy, Santa Maria High School, and Templeton High School!

Sign-ups for Summer Sports Camps are now available, with the "early bird special" being extended just a couple more days. Camps include K-6 multi-sport, rock-climbing (new classes just opened), basketball, and volleyball. There’s also a $40 credit for any non-SLOCA families who mention your name, so feel free to spread the word!

And remember:  Our league champion High School Boys Volleyball team will be hosting their first-ever CIF playoff game next Tuesday, April 30th. It’s tentatively scheduled for 7:00pm at Morro Bay High School, but keep your eyes open for an update later in the week, once CIF publishes their official brackets.

Finally,  sign-ups are now available for Ultimate Frisbee; the students will be grouped by general grade level, but anybody from 1st grade through High School is invited to participate!
