MAY 21, 2019  |  academic year 2018-19  |  A YEAR OF WONDER
Family Bingo 2015

1. Memorial Day is coming up on Monday, May 27th. (Reminder, we DO NOT have school on May 27/28). This day is among those holidays which, although they have great cultural and historical significance for us, we simply don't have the time to dedicate to learning about them during the school day. We do, however, believe that learning about these holidays is a valuable endeavor and want to assist our families in the process of understanding, and perhaps participating in these annual commemorations. All resources can be found here on the Parent Portal. (Note: Chrome is not displaying the resources for some reason, so please use a different browser when viewing the resources. Thank you.)

2. IT’S ALMOST BINGO TIME! On Friday night, May 31st, we’re hosting our annual Bingo Night to support SLOCA Athletics. This year, in hopes of increasing accessibility for everyone, we lowered the price to $20, and we scheduled it to follow Athletics Appreciation Day. The price of admission includes dinner (a hot dog or potato with chili), a drink, and 12 bingo cards. Sign up now B4 it’s too late!

3. Progress reports are due on Wednesday and Thursday, June 5 and 6. Forms will be coming out soon. So keep an eye out for a Slate with the links.

4. Sign-up for Sidecar Spectacular here! It's almost sold out! Don't hesitate!

5.  Fridays are getting an upgrade! Click here for more information.

Wow! I wanted to share with you as we near the end of the school year, how much the Scrip program has helped some of our families. This year we only had 19 families use the system. Those 19 families saved a combined $2,760.00 off of their tuition bill this year. Five of those families saved more than $300.00. One of those families actually saved more than $500.00.

What is Scrip?  It is a program where you buy gift cards at face value, and the vendor gives a rebate back to the school. We give 75% of that rebate back to you as a credit on your Smart Tuition bill. The remaining 25% is used to pay for the Scrip service and the shipping fees associated. There are over 750 business that participate in the Scrip program, everything from stores, restaurants and gas stations.

Already paid off your tuition for the year? That’s okay, start using Scrip now and any rebates earned this year will rollover to next year. You can also continue to use Scrip through the summer.

Not currently enrolled in Scrip? Come and speak to Brenda in The Den to get the sign up information.

Congratulations to the Middle School Boys Volleyball team for finishing their season as league champions with a perfect 9-0 record! That makes a clean sweep for the Middle School boys, who also won league titles in Flag Football and Basketball. Great job, Grizzlies!

Sign-ups for Summer Sports Camps are still available! Camps include K-6 multi-sport, rock-climbing, basketball, and volleyball. There’s also a $40 credit for any non-SLOCA families who mention your name...so spread the word!

Battle of the Books will be waged:
Wednesday May 22, 2:40 pm, for families on Track A, and
Thursday May 24, 2:40 pm, for families on Track B.

It’s a Team Sport!
At the event, you will be assigned to a team consisting of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders and will compete as a team, answering questions about the books you’ve read, and running relays.

The battle questions often begin, “In what book does…?” Your team earns points by answering with the correct book TITLE and AUTHOR, within the time allotted. You and your teammates will compete for prizes and the chance to be the 2019 Battle of the Books Champions.

Join in the fun!
·   Students sign up at the Librarian’s desk.
·   Parents volunteer at the Librarian’s desk to read questions and time the responses.
·   All SLOCA families and staff are invited to come and cheer!

Battle of the Books is a nationwide reading program for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who want to READ good books, challenge themselves, and have FUN.
