APRIL 30, 2019  |  academic year 2018-19  |  A YEAR OF WONDER
Hanging Lantern Review, May 2016
1. Our Holocaust Days of Remembrance Packet is now available in the parent portal. We are so grateful for the many hands (parent & staff) who worked together and so thoughtfully and thoroughly put this informative packet together. This information is intended as a resource for you, the parent and educator, to use to instruct your children at the level appropriate for them. Please read it carefully before discussing the information with your children.

2. Heroic Quest Update:
We love our heroes! Over the past two weeks, our students in grades 1-8 have been performing good deeds in our community and raising money for SLOCA. They have been working extremely hard to meet their family goal and make a difference. In total, we have raised $29,062.90! We are so proud of each and every one of our heroes!

3. Summer Camp: For just a few more days, we are extending the "early bird" special for our now-famous Novel Adventure Camp Series, which offers a variety of ways for all ages to enjoy both reading and adventuring. You’re also eligible to receive a $40 credit for successfully encouraging a non-SLOCA student to sign up, so invite all your friends to join you!

The Novel Adventures Camp Series includes:
Wilderness Adventure Camp, (July 8-12)
Fairy Tale Camp (July 15-19 and July 22-26)
Novel Adventure Camps (July 15-18 and July 22-25)
Sun Tree Creativity Camp (July 22-26)
New Adventure Hikes, (July 15-19)

All the course descriptions, teacher biographies, and registration pages are now available here. And you are welcome to email Mike Godsey at mgodsey@sloclassical.org for registration questions or other info. See you there!

5. Important news about Amazon: Amazon has made changes to their affiliate program which renders our status with them invalid. Therefore, we no longer have the ability to earn commissions by using the link.

Moving forward, the best way to support SLOCA through Amazon is to
make SLO Classical Academy your non-profit of choice through the Amazon Smile program. To sign up for Amazon Smile:

  1. Sign in to smile.amazon.com on your desktop or mobile phone browser.
  2. From your desktop, go to Your Account from the navigation at the top of any page, and then select the option to Change your Charity. Or, from your mobile browser, select Change your Charity from the options at the bottom of the page.
  3. Select San Luis Obispo Classical Academy as your charitable organization to support.

SLOCA High School Yearbook. Follow the prompts to create a free account and place your order. The deadline to order is Monday, May 20th. Yearbooks will be delivered to the school for signing the last week of school. If you need help, please contact support@treering.com or contact Jenny Bischoff, jbischoff@sloclassical.org.

Hello Down Home readers! May is practically here! Visit the blog for this week's supplemental resources. There's some great info about the Rise of the Universities, including some key figures like Thomas Aquinas, Philip IV of France and Edward I of England, so make sure to check them out! Our most recent Day in the Life installment just went live this morning and it's about one of our teachers -- make sure to read all about our Tiny Wonders' Toddler Class! A couple of fantastic posts you may have missed from last week: more about the Wisdom Wonder Project and the second part of our Logic and Lattes discussion with Dr. Kozinski. We highly encourage you to read them!
Book Buy Backs are happening in the store now. We will be buying back books for Store Credit only. Store Credit may be used to purchase any items, including food, in The Den. You may also choose to donate your store credit to another family. Please place any books you would like for us to consider buying back in a box or bag with your name and email address. We will go through the books to see what books we can buy back. We will email you with a total value of store credit and let you know if there are books that we cannot accept that you can pick up.

Savvy shoppers, be sure to start checking our Used Book Shelves on a regular basis if you would like to save money on your curriculum for next year.

This is the last week to purchase your Preschool - UMS yearbook to get free shipping! Please click this link to place your order by May 6th. If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Lee at dlee@sloclassical.org.
Sign-ups for Summer Sports Camps are now available! Camps include K-6 multi-sport, rock-climbing (new classes just opened), basketball, and volleyball. There’s also a $40 credit for any non-SLOCA families who mention your name, so feel free to spread the word!

And remember:  Our league champion High School Boys Volleyball team will be hosting their first-ever CIF playoff game tonight (April 30th) at 5pm. With a win, our 2nd round game will be in LA on Thursday, and then we’re hoping to host a third-round game on Saturday. We’ll keep you updated as well as we can at Morning Meeting, on our website calendar, and on Twitter (@AthleticsSLOCA).

Finally, sign-ups are still available for Ultimate Frisbee; it started this week, but anybody can jump in. The students are grouped by general grade level, and anybody from 1st grade through High School is invited to participate!
The annual SLOCA Tuition Raffle opens tomorrow!  Win FREE tuition for next year -- for details or to learn more, stop by the front office.
