APRIL 9, 2019  |  academic year 2018-19  |  A YEAR OF WONDER
Hello SLOCA families, and welcome back from spring break!

Please enjoy this short note from SLOCA Parent David Stoothoff:

Hello SLOCA community!  We are getting closer to our Wine Pairing Dinner at the Becker's on Saturday, May 4th.  I'm looking forward to providing those who attend a culinary experience of wonder and magic!  Tasting why certain wines elevate particular food and vice versa makes this dinner a must. This is an intimate dinner, fun, informative and in a beautiful setting at Bill and Sandee's home.

With a lifetime of restaurant experience and 16 years of being the Chef/Owner of Madeline's Restaurant, there is nothing better for me than events like this.  A small group relaxing and enjoying a personal experience is a joy for me and a reason I love what I do. My bet is that those who attend will say, "when is the next one!"  I'm excited to see you on May 4th!

Chef David Stoothoff

Get ready to be the hero!
Welcome back, spring breakers! We at Down Home hope you had a wonderful time with your families.

We're back at it with our supplemental resources that are now up on the blog and ready for you to peruse. If you're looking for a little inspiration, make sure to read today's post about the AWAKEN art exhibit. Several of our middle school students participated in this countywide event and received wonderful community response.

Lastly, make sure to tune into the blog for the remainder of this week as we have some inspiring posts coming up!!

We are beginning Book Buy Backs in the store! We will be buying back the following books for Store Credit only.
  • Singapore HIG’s
  • Preschool, Junior Kinder and Kindergarten books, only if they will be used for curriculum next year
  • Renaissance History and Literature books
Please place any books you would like for us to consider buying back in a box or bag with your name and email address.  We will go through the books to see what books we can buy back. We will email you with a total value of store credit and let you know if there are books that we cannot accept that you can pick up. Store credit may be used to purchase any items, including food, in The Den.  Or you may choose to donate your store credit to another family. Please note: We will not be buying back any of the Cambridge Latin books back this year.

Congratulations to Riley Thompson for winning 3rd place in the Monday Clubhouse Conservancy Fine Arts Awards Competition!

Spring at the High School means:  Electives Preview, Senior Projects, Spirit Week, Junior College Lunch, Prom, Hanging Lantern Review Reading, Camping Trip to Kings Canyon, History Day, and Graduation!  More details to come!

Title Game on Thursday!! Come watch the High School Boys Volleyball Team play for their first-ever CIF-sanctioned league title against Coastal Christian on Thursday, at 4pm, at Grace Church. If we win in straight sets (which happened last time they played), Mr. Godsey will be buying pizza at Woodstock’s after the game for SLOCA students who show up to support the team. Come join the party!

Congratulations to Kate Thompson, a Grizzly freshman who competed in a varsity swim meet with Templeton High and Pioneer Valley High and finished in first place in the 200m IM and the 100m fly. She’s less than a second off from qualifying for CIF!

Practice started yesterday, but we are still happily taking sign-ups for Middle School Boys Volleyball, coached by the head coach of the high school varsity team. And sign-ups are now available for Ultimate Frisbee; the students will be grouped by general grade level, but anybody from 1st grade through High School is invited to participate!

Foundation Circle members met yesterday and heard about this trimester’s rallying cry and participated in a fun + productive brainstorming session. These get-togethers are a great way for our stakeholders to interact with our leaders and get to know how SLOCA runs on a more intimate basis. To learn how you can join, reach out to Cozy Faber.
